"Building school and hostel-shelter for orphans in Kamuli, Uganda"

All grown-ups were children first" Antoine de Saint-Exupery, The Little Prince

Join us together with Hope for Orphans and Rural Development [HORD] in Kamuli distric, Uganda to build a first ever school together with hostel-shelter for orphane children.  Let's give chance to these children to feel a bit what a childhood means. Each age has it's rights, and the children have right to play and learn.

direct beneficiaries of the project:

  •  orphan children and children from the poor families, with a special attention to girls, who are more unskilled and vulnerable.

This is a kind of village school to give its orphans, vulnerable children and children from very poor families a better chance in life, through the construction of a school and the establishment of a literacy program, commencing with the first 75 children identified.  The school hopes to expand. as there are already around 400 children identified who are in a crucial need of education in the area [HORD local data, June 2014].

As these children have received no education at the literacy program has to start from scratch. Special attention will be given to girls as unskilled girls are more vulnerable than boys. In order to do it they need to have a proper environment for education.

how the need for the project was determined?

Poverty is everywhere in Uganda, but in rural Uganda, Kamuli district the poverty is paralyzing. Uganda's per-capita income is estimated at $300 USD ($0.82 per day), but those in outlaying areas survive on just a fraction of that, or worse; on nothing at all. The majority of rural people are subsistence farmers, only able to feed themselves and their families. Among the population there are the orphans. If they're lucky, they're taken in by relatives who will provide food and shelter in return for labor. But they cannot afford education. Without basic knowledge, books, newspapers or televisions, they have no access to the outside world. With no knowledge, there is no hope for change.

Current situation of orphaned children is very difficult. Many of them do have neither home nor possibilities to “normal” growth and education. In the very young age they are losing their parents who die because of many different reasons, where majority is among HIV/AIDS, poor living condition and severe lack of access to the drinkable resources of water and food.

current infrastructure situation

Up to date the village school facility does not exist. The school education is not right and there is no healthy learning environment as they are using either such at the picture or sometimes the church structures as class rooms. Schools in Uganda are very different from those ones in developed countries. There are very few government schools with nearly all schools being self- funded by school fees. That is the only way that the children will have any hope of a chance to get an education but the problem still remains that many of these children cannot afford the fees which can be anything from $8 per term upwards.

The teachers have a wonderful dedication to the children and their learning and often there has been no money to pay them. They have families of their own to support and their own children to educate and pay for them, but because they care and they keep coming to school each day to teach regardless the financial gain. Children without parents have no chance for any education without support fro outside. HORD as Non-Governmental Organization is trying to help such children, and giving them hope for better future.

problem statement

The school is located 158 km from Kampala city and 30 km from Kamuli town, on Bugulumbya Kasambira road. There is a good gravel road linking it to the tarred main road, the problem is the economic problems bedevilling the community which has not been spared the scourge of the HIV/AIDS. There are orphans learning at the school and small percentage get assistance from the Universal primary Education (UPE).The community which is predominantly peasantry therefore finds it extremely difficult to pay the school levy per term. In essence, it means the little levies paid cannot sustain capital projects as even Government is failing to give infrastructure grants due to liquidity problems in the economy.

long perspective result

better access to the education, give better chances to improve living condition for girls and boys in the future. In turns better educated people, influence on the overall community in Kamuli. The real school facility and education programme in the village will giving them hope for better and safer future for themselves and their children.

We wish to do some positive change for many children in Uganda and give the possibility to have a normal education and sustainable development possibility at least at their start, as we were lucky enough to have. When we succeed others will join us or follow with the ideas as well.  That is why HORD is searching for funds to build buildings which are secure and  safe  for  the orphans. The school facilities will be also accessible by other children from poor families in Uganda.
